Educational Testing Services (ETS) provides a description of the Praxis exams that every Oakland City University education major must take and pass in order to complete a degree program.
The Praxis Series assessments provide educational tests and other services that states use as part of their teaching licensing certification process. The Praxis I® tests measure basic academic skills, and the Praxis II® tests measure general and subject-specific knowledge and teaching skills (http://www.ets.org).
| What is the Praxis I? |
The Praxis I is a standardized assessment that measures proficiency in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. |
| |
| When do students have to take/pass the Praxis I? |
Education majors at Oakland City University must pass all three sections in order to be allowed to take “300 level” education courses. Students are required to take all three sections sometime during the semester in which they take Education 101. |
| |
| How much does the Praxis I cost? |
As of the spring of 2008, the entire exam (all three sections) will cost students between $110 and $160 for each attempt, depending on the format of the test. Taking fewer than three sections results in a reduction of cost. |
| |
| What are the passing scores? |
The current passing scores are 176 for the Reading section of the test, 175 for the Mathematics section, and 172 for the Writing section. |
| |
| How can SSS help students with the Praxis I? |
Oakland City University Student Support Services offers participants significant assistance with the Praxis I. Those students wishing to do so may borrow study
guides for the test from the Student Support Services Lab. These books generally cost between $25 and $65 when purchased online or from a bookstore. Also, Student Support Services regularly offers individualized study sessions for the Praxis I. Simply stop by Student Support Services (in the SLC, near the Oaks) and indicate that you would like to prepare for the test and a staff member will work with you to create an individualized plan. |
