Cinda Phillips Director, OCU Student Support Services
Cinda Phillips is Director of Student Support Services at Oakland City University, and her responsibilities include the planning, implementation, monitoring and budgeting of the SSS project, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Upon entering college, she was a first generation, low income student, and therefore able to better understand the many challenges SSS students encounter. She graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and then received a Master of Science degree in Management from Oakland City University.
Karen Jones Writing Specialist, OCU Student Support Services
Karen has been the Writing Specialist in Student Support Services for fourteen years. She assists students with any type of writing project—paragraphs to research papers—in all subject areas. She also conducts workshops each semester concerning the content and formatting of cover letters and resumes and follows up by proofreading students’ documents, meeting one-on-one with them, and making suggestions for revisions. Karen was an SSS participant at OCU where she graduated with a BA in English.
Drew McMurray Retention Specialist, OCU Student Support Services
Drew, who is also a former OCU/SSS participant, joined Student Support Services in 2004 after serving for four years as a social studies teacher in the public schools of Indiana. He is presently charged with organizing the SSS Peer Mentor Program, the SSS First Year Experience, and also helps students with Praxis I and II preparation. Drew earned a BS from OCU, a MS from Troy State University, and is nearing completion of a PhD at Indiana State University
Stacy Schmitt Career Specialist, OCU Student Support Services
Stacy is currently the Career Specialist in Student Support Services. As the career specialist, she assists students with career assessments, resumes & cover letters, job searches, internships, networking, and interview preparation. She joined SSS in 2004 as the Administrative Assistant/Tutor Coordinator until December 2007. Stacy was an SSS participant at OCU where she earned a BS in Business Administration with a Management Concentration from Oakland City University.
Mary Morningstar Data Specialist/ Tutor Coordinator, OCU Student Support Services
Mary joined the Student Support Services team in February of 2008 after serving two years as an admissions counselor for the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design. Mary currently supervises the Student Support Services computer lab, coordinates the tutoring and book lending programs, and also handles the administrative tasks for Student Support Services. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Illustration from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design in 2005.
